When we were selling our home in Pennsylvania, the new buyers offered to buy all of our furniture because a leak occurred on the second floor of their home and their furniture was ruined.
A couple bought a resale home in California. To get from their car in the garage to the house, they had to pass through the laundry room. They bought a new front load washer which was deeper than the top load which had been in place. The washer was pushed back to make more room in the hallway which caused a hose to burst when the husband was home but napping. They had to move out of their new house for months while repairs were made. A burst washing machine hose is one of the most common insurance claims.
Our friends moved into a new sample home in a neighboring community. The housekeeper flushed a toilet in a guest bathroom and the flapper did not seal so water kept running. Normally this would not cause a flood as the water would just run down the drain, but some construction debris was in the drain pipe and the toilet had been used just enough so that the drain became completely blocked. Water overflowed from the toilet and flooded one side of the house. The homeowner discovered the problem when he went outside in the morning to get the paper and saw water covering the front walk. They were able to remain in the home during much of the reconstruction but did have to move out and rent a house for a few months.
A home in a gated community was flooded after a water line feeding a toilet burst. The homeowners were away for the summer and the flood was reported to security when water was running out of the garage door to the street. Repairs took months, furniture and floors had to be replaced and a year later they are still not back to where they were before the flood.
Another home in a gated community was recently flooded after a washing machine hose burst. The homeowners were only away for 5 hours but that is plenty of time for devastating damamge to occur.
